Tag: Treat Your Neighbors Correctly - Proverbs 2-3

Proverbs 3:29-32 (ESV Strong's)
Do not plan evil against your neighbor,
who dwells trustingly beside you.
Do not contend with a man for no reason,
when he has done you no harm.
Do not envy a man of violence
and do not choose any of his ways,
for the devious person is an abomination to the Lord,
but the upright are in his confidence.

The book of Proverbs is a collection of precepts, principles and promises that Solomon and others wrote out in regard to their observation of life.  Some would say they are not promises, but simply “observations.”    However, when we compare these proverbs to other portions of Scripture we can see that they indeed offer truths of God that we can count on.  In the above passage we can be assured that the way we treat our neighbors is indeed an abomination to God.   That is a truth we can count on.  Call it an observation or a promise, it is never-the-less a truth.   The “devious” person being described is the one who “plans evil against his neighbor.”  It is the one who “contends with a man for no reason.”  It is the man who is a “man of violence.”   God cares about how we treat our neighbors.  He cares that we demonstrate gentleness and loving kindness.   Solomon outlines these “do not” observations so that we will know how to honor God.    These proverbs are truths to teach us:

Proverbs 1:1-4 (ESV Strong's)
The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:
To know wisdom and instruction,
to understand words of insight,
to receive instruction in wise dealing,
in righteousness, justice, and equity;
to give prudence to the simple,
knowledge and discretion to the youth—

These are written to give us prudence.  It is prudent to treat our neighbors correctly ... with Godly wisdom.
