Psalms 66:1-4 (ESV Strong's)
Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
sing the glory of his name;
give to him glorious praise!
Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!
So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.
All the earth worships you
and sings praises to you;
they sing praises to your name.” Selah

We use the word “awesome” to describe some very “unusual” type things. The word has been watered down by overuse and misplaced direction. In the Hebrew the word is “yare’.” It is used over 300 times in the Old Testament. According to Vine:
(Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary) Basically, this verb connotes the psychological reaction of “fear.” Yare‘ may indicate being afraid of something or someone. .. Used of a person in an exalted position, yare‘ connotes “standing in awe.” This is not simple fear, but reverence, whereby an individual recognizes the power and position of the individual revered and renders him proper respect. In this sense, the word may imply submission to a proper ethical relationship to God ...”.
So, when we sing of God praises and say that his “deeds are awesome,” we are saying that we stand in reverence for His deeds. We stand in awe of them and the power they demonstrate in regard to God’s character. We should be rejoicing, constantly, over God’s awesome deeds. Perhaps we would do wise to ONLY use the word AWESOME to describe something God has done in our lives rather than the latest sandwich we ate, a car we saw, a relationship we found, or yesterday’s sporting event. God put the stars in place ... that is awesome and worthy of the definition of the word. God makes human life ... that is awesome on and worthy of the definition of the word. God saved us through the gift of His Son ... that is awesomeness and certainly worthy of the definition of the word. Praise God for His AWESOME deeds!!
