Galatians 3:21-22 (ESV Strong's)
Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

The book of Galatians is a smaller version of the book of Romans. Paul is attempting to inform the readers of the book that salvation is not received by keeping the Law; by obeying all the commandments. Salvation comes from faith in Christ’s finished work on the cross. This is Paul’s message. If that is the case, what is the purpose of the Law? Paul states in the above verses that the Law served a purpose in our salvation. The Law was a “prison” for us. Some translations say that the Scripture “shut” us in. The word means to lock us up in prison. The Law (Scripture) demonstrates to us that we CAN’T obey (or, keep) the entire law. Since we can’t keep it, we are not able to save ourselves. So, the Law brings us to the point that we realize we are poor in spirit (Mathew 5:3). In the Law we come face to face with our inability to save ourselves. That is when we cry out to God and realize that the promise of faith in Christ provides salvation. We are imprisoned by the Law to be set free by faith in Christ.
