Leviticus 3:6 (ESV)
“If his offering for a sacrifice of peace offering to the LORD is an animal from the flock, male or female, he shall offer it without blemish.
In Leviticus chapters 1-3 we have an outline of the three main offerings to God. These chapters contain instructions on how to offer the Burnt Offering, the Grain Offering and the Peace Offering. The Burnt Offering was an act of surrender to God. The Grain Offering was an act of service to God. The Peace Offering was the act of communion with God. In the above verse we have the mention of the Peace Offering. If the worshipper was bringing a Peace Offering from the flock it had to be one without blemish. In our communion with God we need to come without sin. That is, of course, impossible, which shows the need for the Christ. That is the Gospel message. It is important to know that we can’t have peace with God, fellowship with Him, without Him offering that peace. The story in John 21 of the disciples going fishing after the resurrection of Jesus is a great example of this. It would not be surprising that even after His resurrection, the followers of Jesus lost their direction. Peter decides He is going fishing (back to his occupation and what he knew). Jesus comes along and reestablishes both fellowship with them, communion with them and purpose for them. This is the glory of the Gospel. Jesus is not waiting for us to bring a sacrifice to Him to reestablish peace. He is bringing Himself to offer that sacrifice so we can have peace with God. He is our peace.
Ephesians 2:14 (ESV)
14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility
