2 John 1:2 (ESV Strong's)
because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:
Truth: Truth is more than a command, it is a relationship with the Christ you is TRUTH.
2 John was written to make sure the church John is writing to will continue their walk in love for one another. The reason that is so important is that true Biblical love is not simply based upon obeying a command of Christ to love one another (although, that would be enough if that were the only reason). The reason John wants them to walk in love is because true Biblical love is based upon truth!! Truth, however, is not a mere systematic set of rules. Truth is a person. Note:
John 14:6 (ESV Strong's)
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
If Truth were simply a set of known and agreed upon statements, it would "abide" in us by our knowledge of those statements and our agreement to them. However, Biblical Truth is the Person of Christ. Christ is the embodiment of all Truth. When we believe in Christ we have the living Truth living within us to influence us, empower us, equip us, and motivate us to love our fellow believers. The Truth (Christ) is the motivation to love others. Love, per John, is the single most important outcome of a relationship with Christ. Since THE Truth loved us, and the THE Truth is indwelling us, we can't help but love others and abide in the faith. When John tells us that the truth abides in us he wants us to know this a personal relationship and not some mere commitment to some stated and agreed upon premise. The Truth is a relationship.
My 2025 Theme Verses: Ezra 7:10 (ESV) For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel. Daniel 1:8 (ESV) But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.
