God Disciplines Those He Loves - 2 Kings 11-15

2 Kings 13:1-3 (ESV)

In the twenty-third year of Joash the son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and he reigned seventeen years. He did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin; he did not depart from them. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them continually into the hand of Hazael king of Syria and into the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael.

This is God’s way.  Those who disobey Him will endure His correction.  Why?

Proverbs 3:11-12 (ESV)

My son, do not despise the LORD’S discipline

or be weary of his reproof,

for the LORD reproves him whom he loves,

as a father the son in whom he delights.

Hebrews 12:5-6 (ESV)

And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

“My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,

nor be weary when reproved by him.

For the Lord disciplines the one he loves,

and chastises every son whom he receives.”

There are other reasons:

Galatians 6:6-7 (ESV)

Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.

The principle of sowing and reaping is a constant.  God does not overlook our sin.   We are to live our lives with the understanding that God will hold us accountable for the word He gives us.  Disobedience to that word results in the principles of the above verses.
