Psalms 85:4-7 (ESV)
Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
and put away your indignation toward us!
Will you be angry with us forever?
Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
Will you not revive us again,
that your people may rejoice in you?
Show us your steadfast love, O LORD,
and grant us your salvation.
This is part of a larger prayer in chapter 85. It is a plea by the writer for God’s covenant grace to be poured out upon them. He begs God to restore the nation and to revive the nation so that they might rejoice in the Lord. We must be restored and revived by God before we can rejoice in God. The prayer is one that should be repeated daily for us. The writer realizes that their collective sin has put them on the wrong side of God. He writes to ask God about how long His anger will be displayed to them. Rather than God’s anger, the writer pleads for God’s steadfast love. He pleads for God’s salvation. The big idea of this section:
We can only rejoice after we have been restored and revived by God’s steadfast love and salvation.
