1 Samuel 17:36-38 (ESV Strong's)
Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.” And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

David has come into the camp of the Israelites and has heard the chanting and taunting of the Goliath. David has heard it, but has not been swayed by it. Instead, he takes on the following mindset:
1 Samuel 17:26 (ESV Strong's)
And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
How can a young boy feel this way when the mighty men around him do not? We find the answer in the above verses. God has been preparing David for this moment for quite some time. God has brought in little battles so that David was ready for the big war. God uses the little things in our lives to prepare us. To us, the little thing may not feel that little. I can’t imagine being a young David while meeting a lion or a bear while watching sheep. Yet, that is what he was exposed to. God brought these times into his life so that he would have practice with his sling shot. It is probably alright to assume that while David was tending the sheep (a boring job) he would practice with his sling, over and over. Now was the time all this preparation was intended. David could feel confident in God’s power because He was familiar with God’s presence in his life on previous occasions. Great faith in times of trouble has been forge in smaller times of trials.
