Tag: A Broken Spirit Can Close the Ears - Exodus 5-8

Exodus 6:9-13 (ESV Strong's)
Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because of their broken spirit and harsh slavery.
So the Lord said to Moses, “Go in, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the people of Israel go out of his land.” But Moses said to the Lord, “Behold, the people of Israel have not listened to me. How then shall Pharaoh listen to me, for I am of uncircumcised lips?” But the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them a charge about the people of Israel and about Pharaoh king of Egypt: to bring the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

In the midst of delivering the nation of Israel from the bondage of Egypt, the people’s spirit would not allow them to hear the Word from God.  That is the message of the above passage.   Moses was sent to speak to Pharaoh to tell him to let God’s people go.  The nation of Israel should have been rejoicing.  Remember, it was they who cried out for deliverance and God “heard” them:

Exodus 2:23-25 (ESV Strong's)
God Hears Israel's Groaning
During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the people of Israel—and God knew.

Yet, when God sent someone to deliver them (Moses) they groaned about that, as well.   God wants to deliver us but we don’t always like the process He uses to deliver us.  God wants to deliver us but we don’t always like the timing God uses to deliver us.   He hears our groaning but we don’t always hear His answer.  Like the nation of Israel our “broken spirit” shuts our ears from hearing God’s plan.   The only solution to that is found in the rest of the above passage.   God simply repeats what He already told Israel through the mouth of Moses.   God does not change His plan simply because we don’t like the method, timing or direction of His plan.  God will simply repeat the Words He has previously said, and waits for us to mix those words with faith, believe, trust and then obey!  That is God’s formula.  There are no short cuts to receiving God’s blessing.   Remember, at some point Israel does obey, Pharaoh is destroyed, and they are headed for the Promise Land of Blessing.  But, they had to open their ears and let God’s plan, power and presence overcome their broken spirit.   Their “broken spirit” was a stronghold in their mind they had to use “divine power” to destroy:

2 Corinthians 10:3-4 (ESV Strong's)
For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.

Believing God’s Word, no matter how we feel, will overcome our strongholds.
