Tag: When Spiritual Leaders Go Bad - Isaiah 23-28

Isaiah 28:7-10
These also reel with wine
and stagger with strong drink;
the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink,
they are swallowed by wine,
they stagger with strong drink,
they reel in vision,
they stumble in giving judgment.
For all tables are full of filthy vomit,
with no space left.
“To whom will he teach knowledge,
and to whom will he explain the message?
Those who are weaned from the milk,
those taken from the breast?
For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept,
line upon line, line upon line,
here a little, there a little.”

Isaiah is a prophet sent to Israel and Judah (God’s People).  He is sent to speak a clear message that God is feed up with their sin and rejection of Him.  God has repeatedly given them truth and they have repeatedly said with their lips, “Yes, Lord, we understand,” but have said with their lives, “We are going to keep doing what we have always done ... doing life MY way.”    The worse part of Israel’s story is that the spiritual leaders of the country were simply getting drunk and, rather than working with Isaiah, were mocking his teaching.   The above line in the Amplified Version of God’s Word says:

Isaiah 28:7-10
But even these reel from wine and stagger from strong drink: the priest and the prophet reel from strong drink; they are confused from wine, they stagger and are gone astray through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble when pronouncing judgment.
For all the tables are full of filthy vomit, so that there is no place that is clean.
To whom will He teach knowledge? [Ask the drunkards.] And whom will He make to understand the message? Those who are babies, just weaned from the milk and taken from the breasts? [Is that what He thinks we are?]
For it is [His prophets repeating over and over]: precept upon precept, precept upon precept, rule upon rule, rule upon rule; here a little, there a little.

They mocked Isaiah and made him out to be a teacher of infants.  They not only rejected God, but made a mockery out of His messenger.   To them, Isaiah was simply trying to teach THEM the alphabet ... as though they were small children.   When spiritual leaders go bad, the entire country goes bad.
