Tag: God Makes Man Significant - Ecclesiastes 5-6

Ecclesiastes 6:10
Whatever has come to be has already been named, and it is known what man is, and that he is not able to dispute with one stronger than he.

Tag:  God Makes Us Significant

In Ecclesiastes chapter six we are reading words about the futility of life.  The emphasis is on the fact the fool and the wise man both are going to the grave.   As the writer brings the section to a close the above verse is stated.   The reference returns to a previous theme that there is nothing new under the sun.  However, in the above verse we go right back to the original “naming” of creation.   When something is “named” it is brought into existence.  When God named the heavens, the earth, the sun, the moon, He brought them into existence.   When God brought Adam into existence He named him.   God was “stronger” than man and that is demonstrated by the fact that He named Adam.  As a result, we are not able to “dispute” with the ONE who named us ... i.e. God!   When God names something it gives that something significance.   Mankind has significance because He is “stronger” than us.   It is God that gives mankind significance.  Man tries to get significance from the things he/she creates.  They are buildings after themselves; they name drugs and diseases after themselves; they name cities and roads and moments after themselves.  They believe this will give me significance.   What really gives us significance is God creating us and giving us purpose and meaning.
