Job 37:5-8
God thunders wondrously with his voice;
he does great things that we cannot comprehend.
For to the snow he says, ‘Fall on the earth,’
likewise to the downpour, his mighty downpour.
He seals up the hand of every man,
that all men whom he made may know it.
Then the beasts go into their lairs,
and remain in their dens.
Tag: God Uses Creation to Show His Power and to Control Man’s Activity
Elihu is speaking to Job to let him know that God is both powerful and knowledgeable about Job’s condition. To illustrate this truth the above is spoken to Job. Unlike Job’s other friends, who insisted on using their own philosophies to condemn Job, Elihu is speaking about the sovereign power of God to encourage and correct Job. In this truth Elihu reminds Job that God is so powerful he can send a rain storm or a snow storm and completely “seal up the hand of every man.” God can send rain so hard and snow so mighty that even the “beasts go into their laurels and remain in their dens.” God is sovereign. He uses His power to direct the affairs of mankind “that all men whom he made may know it.” God has given us this display of His power so that we can rejoice in it and not be fearful of it. In the midst of a thunderstorm and a powerful rain storm, who does not go to the window and behold the power of it? This is God demonstrating who He is. God can send just a couple of inches of snow and shut down the entire state of Texas. God uses His creation to declare His glory:
Psalms 19:1-6
The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,
which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
When we fear that things are falling apart and/or life is too complex and unmanageable, we need to relax, rest and lean into the amazing power and sovereignty of God. He is in complete control.
