Tag: God Keeps His Promises - Jeremiah 32-36

Jeremiah 33:19-21
The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: “Thus says the Lord: If you can break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night will not come at their appointed time, then also my covenant with David my servant may be broken, so that he shall not have a son to reign on his throne, and my covenant with the Levitical priests my ministers.

The above passage is from Jeremiah when he was receiving a promise from God about the land of Israel.   God was about to send the nation of Babylon to capture the land and to burn the capital city of Jerusalem.  God has said He was going to take the nation captive and bring them to Babylon.   Yet, God also said He was gong to restore the land some day. In fact in the proceeding chapter he was going to have the prophet Jeremiah purchase some land and put the dead to the land in a jar.   It was God’s way of saying, “I will restore this land.”   In fact, God says:

Jeremiah 32:15
For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall again be bought in this land.’

In our passage here, God is making sure that Jeremiah knows that God keeps His promises.   The picture He gives us is so practical.  He tells Jeremiah that someone would have to break the cycle of day-night-day-night before any promise of God is broken.  God uses the cycle of a 24-hour day to demonstrate that He NEVER breaks His promises.   As we get up in the morning and as we go to bed each night we have a constant reminder that God keeps His promises.   Yes, the day-night cycle serves other purposes, but God uses it here to demonstrate His faithfulness.   Although we never know when we will die and cease to see day and night, we can be assured, until Christ comes again we will have day and night.  In fact, that is a promise, as well.   God will end the day-night-day-night cycle ONLY by fulfilling His promises to set up a New Heaven and a New Earth:

Revelation 21:23-25
And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there.

Even then, God demonstrates He keeps His promises.
