Tag: Work Hard - Helping the Weak - Acts 19-20

Acts 20:35
In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

In the above passage the Apostle Paul is saying his farewells to the elders in the churches at Ephesus.  Paul spent significant time there and had established those who came to Christ, teaching them and working with them to grow.  Now, leaving (and never returning), Paul was admonishing them to follow his example.  He had arrived to share the Gospel and had stayed to strengthen their weak souls.  He is now telling them to strengthen the weak, themselves.  Paul had dedicated his life to fulfill the “good works” he was ordained, before the foundation of the earth, to accomplish.   Note what Paul would eventually write to these same believers:

Ephesians 2:10
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Paul understood that God had created him to do work for God and to meet the needs of others ... those weak in the faith.  We are not here to enjoy life.  We are here to praise God by doing His work ... that work includes helping the “weak.”   This is “hard work.”  It is not easy to be patient with the weak and those who do no know Christ.  But, that was Paul’s life and he believed it was their life, as well. It is my life as well.
