Luke 7:13 (NASBStr)
When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, “ Do not weep.”
Have you ever seen a funeral procession? We don't see them much any more. But, back in the day, it was not unusual to see a long chain of cars following the hearse carrying the remains of someone's loved one. You typically saw this caravan when you were in a hurry. Although there was respect within the observation it would be surprising if there was compassion as talked about above. When Jesus saw this funeral procession coming out of the city he was so moved with compassion for her and spoke to her. Vine says the following about this word, "compassion" in our above verse:
"splanchnizomai (σπλαγχνιζομαι, 4697), “to be moved as to one’s inwards (splanchna), to be moved with compassion, to yearn with compassion,” is frequently recorded of Christ towards the multitude and towards individual sufferers, Matt. 9:36; 14:14; 15:32; 18:27; 20:34; Mark 1:41; 6:34; 8:2; 9:22 (of the appeal of a father for a demon- possessed son); Luke 7:13; 10:33; of the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son, 15:20. (Moulton and Milligan consider the verb to have been coined in the Jewish dispersion)."
How many times do we see the death of others and their pain and are moved in the very core of our being? Jesus was so moved he used His power to raise the son again. We don't have that power but that shouldn't stop us from being moved. Jesus begins by simply telling her to "not weep." Imagine if we were to say the same thing to someone. They might laugh us to scorn. They might scold us. But, in 1 Thessalonians 5 we are told to "not sorrow, as those who have no hope" because we believe in Chris and life after death. Yet, it doesn't say to "not weep." Jesus has a message for us that is so hard to grasp. He can do such a work in our lives that He wants us to change our emotion. He is asking her to "not weep" based on what He is "about" to do. She needs her emotions to respond to faith in Christ. When we have faith in Christ we can see our very emotions changed. Try to share that the next time you see someone hurting. Allow God to move you with compassion. Point others to faith in Christ to allow Christ to change their emotions.
