Psalms 111:1 (ESV)
Praise the LORD!
I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart,
in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
Psalm 111 is a song of great praise for the works of God in the lives of His people. in the next seven verses the writer uses the term work or works five times. He wants us to praise God for God’s great works among us. To start the song of praise, however, he tells us who to praise; how we are to praise God; and where we are to praise God. That seems important to him to state, before he tells what to praise God for.
1. Who? He states right off the bat to praise the LORD. We can get ourselves into a fix by worshipping and praising things of this earth. The writer of the song tells first and foremost our praise is to be directed at God.
2. How? We are to praise God with our whole heart. He is not wanting half-hearted praise. He wants us to give our all in our praise for God. We are not to be distracted or diminished in our praise for Him.
3. Where? We are to praise God in the fellowship with other people of faith. This is a direct statement that we are to be corporate worship; with others. Individual worship is also stressed in the palms, but this song commands us to find other believers to praise and worship God.
It is only until we know who to praise, how to praise and where to praise that we can then sing thanks for His great works among us.
