Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Man, despite God's grace, mercy and warnings, continues to hold God in contempt. Perhaps the saddest part of any writing is when it records man's disobedience to God. In Psalm 2 we see that story told again as man rages and plots against God. But God laughs, as He always does at man's foolishness. If, however, we take refuge in God (2:12b) we find, once again, His grace, mercy and blessing. We are not to conspire against Him, we are to obey and follow him. The writer tells us to kiss the Son. Like a subject kissing the ring of the king, we are to pay homage to the Son, Jesus Christ. Note how the writer of Hebrews speaks about this thought:
Hebrews 12:28-29 (ESV)
Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.
In the reverse of this, note what God said here to Elijah:
1 Kings 19:18 (ESV) Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
Who we worship, we kiss. The kiss shows favor and homage to the person. Be careful who you kiss and for what reason. There are those who kiss the wrong god and receive God’s wrath. There are those who kiss the Son and find blessings.
