Sing and Worship for Evangelistic Reasons - Psalms 96-98

Psalms 96:2 (ESV)

Sing to the LORD, bless his name;

tell of his salvation from day to day.

Psalm 96 is one of the most powerful songs of praise.  It is quite familiar since it has been memorialized in song by several popular Christian artist groups (see link below).   The song is about the power and faithfulness of God.   It is exalts God’s attributes of power, justice, creation, salvation, strength, and beauty to mention a few.   The above line is stated as a command to the reader.   We are to bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.  That means there is not a time we don’t tell of his salvation.  It is to be on our lips and demonstrated by our living.   Note the New Testament version of this thought:

2 Corinthians 6:1-2 (ESV)

1 Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says,

“In a favorable TIME I listened to you,

and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Colossians 4:5-6 (ESV)

5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the TIME. 6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

Romans 13:11 (ESV)

11 Besides this you know the TIME, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.

There is always a time to tell others to wake up and see the salvation of the Lord.   That is the point of the Gospel and the reason for our existence and our meaning for life.   We were saved to give Him glory and sing these praises.  But to also sing these attributes of God to a lost world so they, too, can see here the Gospel and be saved.  Now is the TIME.
