God Is Concerned About Our Speech - Proverbs 10

 Proverbs 10:19 (ESV)

When words are many, transgression is not lacking,

but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.


I talk too much. If I could ever learn to just shut-up I could save myself all kinds of trouble. The above proverb was written for me. If you talk too much you might over commit and never really get the job done you said you would get done (hence making a vow you don’t complete, which is sin to God). If you talk too much you tend to eventually say something in frustration and therefore sin. If you talk too much you might just go on and on about nonsensical things and since God’s word tells you to avoid babbling and vain disputes, that type of talk is sinful. You see, talking too much leads to many sins. But, a wise man knows when to talk and when to listen. He knows when to not over commit or say something out of frustration or say nonsensical things. I'm going to be quite now. It is time for me to just shut-up. Enough said!

God wants to use our talk.  Notice these admonitions that tell us to talk:


1 Peter 3:15 (ESV)

but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,


Colossians 4:6 (ESV)

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
