My Soul Waits for God Alone
TO THE CHOIRMASTER: ACCORDING TO JEDUTHUN. A PSALM OF DAVID.
1 For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
3 How long will all of you attack a man
to batter him,
like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
4 They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.
They take pleasure in falsehood.
They bless with their mouths,
but inwardly they curse. Selah
5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
Psalm 62 is a worship song that is meant to draw the worshipper to understand that the more complex and difficult the assault from men the more dynamic and powerful is the deliverance from God. The first verse and the fifth verse bracket the difficulty David, the writer, is facing:
Vs. 1 For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
Vs. 5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.
The verses in the middle tell us the hardship Davis is facing. He has those who will attack him with different methods:
1. They batter him. The Hebrew word means to murder him. Obviously they have not, but in their attacks their meaning is his certain death.
2. They pursue him as though they are trying to knock down a leaning fence. This indicates David is vulnerable and weak.
3. They use false narratives that begin with blessing but end with falsehood. Like Judas betraying Jesus with a kiss they attempt to lure David in, only to stab him in the back.
David knows he is secure in God’s care, no matter the intent of those who seek him. There coming at him with blessing but inwardly are hoping to kill him, makes it impossible for him to discern who is with him and who is against him. But David’s hope is not in HIS ability to discern, but in GOD’S ability and desire to save:
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
