But you have rejected us and disgraced us
and have not gone out with our armies.
You have made us turn back from the foe,
and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
You have made us like sheep for slaughter
and have scattered us among the nations.
You have sold your people for a trifle,
demanding no high price for them.
You have made us the taunt of our neighbors,
the derision and scorn of those around us.
You have made us a byword among the nations,
a laughingstock among the peoples.
All day long my disgrace is before me,
and shame has covered my face
at the sound of the taunter and reviler,
at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.
Those who reject God are rejected by God. The nation of Israel had rejected their God and found themselves with the above conditions. It is God who makes us who we are and what we have regarding safety and blessings in our lives. God wants us to follow Him and crave Him. Note how these three Psalms started out:
Psalms 42:1-2 (ESV)
As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
If these two verses are true in our lives, the proceeding seven don’t apply. The situation for Israel is that they ceased to do the one and were eventually faced with the other. When we seek God we have wonderful joy in His presence. But when we reject Him we have nothing but the scorn and shame of the world.
