God Is In Control of Government - Jeremiah 17-21

Jeremiah 18:7-10 (ESV)

If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it. And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it.

God is in control of the nations and the leaders of all nations.   Every believer ought to memorize the following:

Psalms 75:6-7 (ESV)

For not from the east or from the west

and not from the wilderness comes lifting up,

but it is God who executes judgment,

putting down one and lifting up another.

In the above lines from Jeremiah we read that God decides the good and the bad for a nation.  He then carries out the good or bad based upon their evilness or their righteousness as a nation.   This is why it is so important that the spiritual leaders of those nation do not diminish their walk before the world.  Every nation is evil since sin is in the hearts of all people in a nation.  It is the role of believers in each nation to live in such a way that the nation does not fall into complete corruption.  This was the challenge with Israel and Judah.   It began with the fact that the kings and the priests did not honor God.  That was their role as designed by God.  When leadership fails to honor God, so the nation fails to honor God.  The priests in particular were supposed to teach God’s word.  But they compromised their teaching and the nation fell.  God is clear regarding His care for the nations.   When the spiritual leaders fail to do their jobs the nation will receive the above formula presented by Jeremiah.   Good nations are blessed with God’s goodness.  Bad nations will receive evil for their evil ways.
