Tag: Man Searches for Wisdom in Vain - Job 27-28

Job 28:1-3 (ESV Strong's)
(Job Continues: Where Is Wisdom?)

“Surely there is a mine for silver,
and a place for gold that they refine.
Iron is taken out of the earth,
and copper is smelted from the ore.
Man puts an end to darkness
and searches out to the farthest limit
the ore in gloom and deep darkness.

In chapter 28 of Job we read about man’s search for wisdom.   The end of the chapter gives us the answer:

Job 28:28 (ESV Strong's)
And he said to man,
‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,
and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”

That, of course, is the theme of the book of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, as well:

Proverbs 9:10 (ESV Strong's)
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (ESV Strong's)
The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning (and end) of wisdom.  Yet, man attempts to find it in all the wrong places.  In Job 28, above, we read about him digging in the center of the earth for wisdom.   Man is searching for substance and believes the gold, copper and precious jewels below the earth’s crust will contain what he is looking for.   Yet, wisdom is not found in the stuff God created, by in the God of creation.   Man simply goes about looking for wisdom (and thus, satisfaction) in all the wrong places.   They are looking for it in “places” rather in a “person.”   Man thinks he can find the wisdom he desires by looking down, under the earth, when the wisdom he wants and needs is up, above the heavens.  Never has anyone been so wrong about something so important.  You can’t find wisdom in creation.  It is found in fearing and honoring the Creator.
