Matthew 14:31-33
Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Tag: Living Faith Can be Little or Big
Saving faith is the same for all of us. We all have to come to Jesus and believe He is the risen Savior and saved us from our sins! That is “saving” faith. Coming to Jesus takes the same faith. But we also are told that the “just shall ‘live’ by faith” (Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38). Yes, we have been justified by faith, but we are also being sanctified by faith (Acts 26:18). In the above text we read that Peter (a man of faith) was actually acting in “little” faith. It wasn’t that he had “no” faith. He simply had “little” faith. Peter was not alone:
Matthew 6:30
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Matthew 8:26
And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
Matthew 16:8
But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread?
Matthew 17:20
He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
These verses were all stated to people who should have had great faith in Christ. Yet, they showed “little” faith. However, note the text below and who it is said about:
Matthew 15:22 and 28
And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon. ... Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.
We are all to have great faith, but there are times when even the “Peters” in life have weak faith. The key is to put Christ at the center of your life and worship only Him and believe He can move mountains. Than and only then will we have great faith:
Matthew 17:20
He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
