Nehemiah 8:6-8
And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.

As Nehemiah returns to Jerusalem, his mission was to rebuild the city walls and make it inhabited again. Ezra the priest worked along side him to rebuild the Temple and make it functional and worshipful again. Neither of the men doubted the power of God to complete the tasks before them. However, the above passage tells us even more about their work. As the city walls were restored and the Temple walls rebuilt, the Word of God was lifted up and the hearts of the people were rebuilt. God sent Nehemiah and Ezra help to teach the people. The names in the above verses are not significant. Most would not recognize any of them. They were just priest and teachers who were incorporated by Ezra to teach the Word of God to the people. As they did, the people (see the following chapters) begin to not just hear The Word, but obey it. God granted them repentance as they heard truth. As the truth was mixed with faith and obedience, God began to bless the people. It all began with God’s Word being taught.
