Tag: Great Leaders Surround Themseleves with Great Leaders - 2 Samuel 5-9

2 Samuel 8:15-18 (David's Officials)
So David reigned over all Israel. And David administered justice and equity to all his people. Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder, and Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests, and Seraiah was secretary, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and David's sons were priests.

David was a great leader, but he was not an “alone” leader.  David did not try to do it alone.  David surrounded himself with great men who were, in their own worlds, great leaders.   Each of the above names is recorded in several spots in the Old Testament as followers and officers for King David.  They are faithful, loyal anal skilled in there trade and craft.  We don’t know much about some of them, but only that David trusted them to complete their assigned role.  No leader can be a great leader until they first develop the people around them.  Perhaps the best passage to demonstrate David’s leadership and the development of others is Psalm 45.   That Psalm is a praise to King David and his leadership.  It speaks of loyalty and sacrifice for the king.  This is what David solicited from those above.  But, it also shows David’s sacrifice and loyalty to them.   If you want to be a great leader you can’t be the center and you can’t do it on your own.   That is selfish and prideful leadership.   Great leaders surround themselves with other great leaders.    David was that kind of leader.
