Tag: Message Trumps Presentation Skills - 1 Corinthians 1-2

1 Corinthians 2:1-5 (Proclaiming Christ Crucified)
And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

Paul was trained at the feet of one of the most popular Pharisees.  He was trained in schools of thought in regard to the Jewish mind.   Yet, when he had a chance to boast about his “education” and “qualification” he refused.  Instead, Paul realized that the person making the presentation and the skill of the presentation was so minor compared to the subject and content of the presentation:  Jesus Christ and Him crucified.  The message of God’s love was not and would never be enhanced by the skill of the orator.  Today, because listeners are so “entertainment” oriented, the message of Christ has to be “packaged” just right.   But, Paul realized that the power of words and the art of persuasion was not needed when it came to the work of the Spirit and the Message of Christ.  Christ is powerful .. without the preachers delivery.   It is the MESSAGE that changes hearts, not the DELIVERY.    In the world it is the art of the delivery and the art of persuasion that carries the message.   God needs not our fancy words, PowerPoints, or technology-enhanced presentations.   God simply needs the love of Christ and the power of the cross to change a heart.
