Job 1:10
Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
Tag: God Hedges Us!!
We have all heard the phrase, “hedge your bets.” The phrase came from the financial world. When the financial institution committed to a larger loan, to protect themselves, they would secure smaller loans, to protect, or hedge, themselves, should the larger load fail. It was their protection. We might call it a “plan B.” We all want to make sure we have protection and a way to prevent “bankruptcy” of life. In the above text Satan, when speaking of Job, argues with God that the reason Job is so faithful to Him is because God has put a “hedge” of protection around Job. The word “hedge” in the Hebrew means to “close in” or “secure in.” It is used only three times in the OT. It is used first, here, and then later in Job but translated “knit”:
Job 10:11
You clothed me with skin and flesh,
and knit me together with bones and sinews.
It is also used in in the prophetic book of Hosea when speaking about Hoses adulterous wife. God tells Hosea that He will “hedge” her in and keep her from the lovers she pursues and she seeks after.
Hosea 2:6
Therefore I will hedge up her way with thorns,
and I will build a wall against her,
so that she cannot find her paths.
We can rejoice in the truth that God “hedges” up those who are His children. He protects us and keeps us secure. Christ said it this way:
John 10:28
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
We are so secure in God’s hands that Satan has to ask God’s permission to touch us. The most evil influence in the universe has to have God’s permission to do ANYTHING to us and with us. This is a most blessed truth to live out each day. NOTHING will touch us that God, first and foremost, does not allow. If He allows it we can be assured that He is working a blessed plan for us and He alone knows it. We are to simply trust in the character and the awesomeness of God.
