God’s Uses Weather To Control Mankind - Psalms 146-148

Psalms 147:17 (ESV)

He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs;

who can stand before his cold?

SNOW DAY!    Probably the best day in a kids life is when they call off school for a snow day.   The above verse talks about how God uses weather for many reasons.  God controls the snow.  He makes the ice.  The verse just before the above verse adds to this thought:

Psalms 147:16 (ESV)

He gives snow like wool;

he scatters frost like ashes.

Then there is this one in the next chapter:

Psalms 148:7-8 (ESV)

Praise the LORD from the earth,

you great sea creatures and all deeps,

fire and hail, snow and mist,

stormy wind fulfilling his word!

In the book of Job we read these two verses.  Elihu, the speaker, is trying to help Job get out of his depression.  He does so by speaking the glory and majesty of God, using God’s control over the weather to do so.

Job 37:10-13 (ESV)

By the breath of God ice is given,

and the broad waters are frozen fast.

He loads the thick cloud with moisture;

the clouds scatter his lightning.

They turn around and around by his guidance,

to accomplish all that he commands them

on the face of the habitable world.

Whether for correction or for his land

or for love, he causes it to happen.

God himself speaks to Job in the same way and does so to get Job to take his eyes off his dilemma and onto the power of who God is:

Job 38:28-30 (ESV)

“Has the rain a father,

or who has begotten the drops of dew?

From whose womb did the ice come forth,

and who has given birth to the frost of heaven?

The waters become hard like stone,

and the face of the deep is frozen.

At the time of this writing there is an actual snow day in our area.   Schools are closed.   Commerce is slowed.   The world slows down a bit.  Plans are altered.  God can bring it all to a complete stop with the breath of His word, using weather to control mankind.  Part of the wonders He brought on Egypt to punish them were weather related.  God used a strong wind to bring in quail to the Israelites when they complained to Moses about food to eat in the desert.  He corrected Jonah’s waywardness with a storm at sea.  Jesus calmed the storm at sea to teach the disciples.   God uses weather to show us His power and majesty.
