1 Peter 1:10-12 (ESV)
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
There is so, so much in these three verses. Peter is attempting to set the stage for the rest of his letter. He wants his audience to understand that their salvation is vast and deep. He wants them to know that what they have in their salvation was part of the master plan of God and revealed to them by the Holy Spirit, sent from heaven, to teach them and encourage them. The preaching of the good news was not a hap-hazard approach. It was God, speaking through the Son and the Spirit about the glories God is giving to mankind by faith in the Son. It is not just Jesus’ death for us that was so beneficial, but also the subsequent glories that followed. The below list I have had for some time and not sure where I gleaned it, but note these glories that followed Jesus’ suffering on the cross for our sins:
Subsequent Glories that followed after Christ’s suffering:
1. Death
2. Proclaimed in “prison” that sin was conquered and death defeated and provided external life for us
3. His resurrection
4. His manifestation on the earth that he was alive
5. His accession
6. His sitting at the right hand of God
7. His intercession for us
8. His sending the Spirit
9. His comforting us in our mourning.
10. His guiding us in our walking
11. His coming again to receive us.
12. His conquering of the enemy once for all.
13. His final victory and be hailed as king of kings and lord of lords by all kings, lords, peasants and slave.
God had a plan and the plan was to give to us His glory through the Son’s death and subsequent glories and by the Spirit’s work. We have a faith that the prophets themselves investigated and sought true meaning. Our salvation is full of beauty and wonder. God wants us to see those glories and be conformed to those glories:
2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV)
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
