God Doesn’t Need Us - Psalms 131-133

Psalms 132:1 (ESV)

A SONG OF ASCENTS.

Remember, O LORD, in David’s favor,

all the hardships he endured,

Psalms 132:10 (ESV)

For the sake of your servant David,

do not turn away the face of your anointed one.

Psalms 132 comes out of the section in Psalms entitled, A Song of Ascents. It is a group of Psalms (15 songs) that the nation of Israel sang to honor God on their way to festivals in Jerusalem.  This particular psalm is made up of two vows:

1. The vow of David to God to build Him a permanent home in Jerusalem.

2. The vow of God to David to honor him and his sons if they continued to keep His covenant.

In the above two verses we read the lines asking God to remember David and His covenant to him.  The key here is to realize that God keeps His covenant.  God does not need a place to dwell.  Yet, He accepted David’s merger offer.  God does not  need mankind to be God. Yet, God accepts mankind and makes a way for mankind to enjoy fellowship with him.  What we have in these songs is a picture of God’s amazing grace.  God does not need anything we offer Him.  Yet, in mercy and grace He stoops down and receives us and our gifts.  Imagine the God of the universe, who created all and owns all the galaxies seen and unseen, being moved by a sinful man who offers to build Him a mere Temple made of wood, and stone and some gold (wood, stone and gold that God actually created).   God accepts the offer.   It is a picture of His mercy and grace.   We offer to God our mere treasures, talents and time.  We think we are special to do so.  Yet, it is God who gave us our treasures, talents and time.  We can ask God to remember us and show His favor on us, but we ought not to think God needs us or what we give.  It is His amazing grace that this is even possible.
