Hebrews 10:15-18 (ESV)
And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
“This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws on their hearts,
and write them on their minds,”
then he adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
The writer of Hebrews, in this section, is showing us the power of Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins as compared to the Old Testament sacrifical system. He states that the old system was a shadow of what Jesus came to do (it was an example or pattern):
Hebrews 8:5 (ESV)
They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.”
In the above passage we read the Holy Spirit is writing this material to bear witness that this new convent is the final act of caring for our sins. In the old covenant they had to keep offering sacrifice for sins. If a single sacrifice in the old covenant would have taken away sin, they would not have to keep offering sacrifice for sins:
Hebrews 10:1-2 (ESV)
For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?
Jesus on the other hand is the final sacrifice, for all sin. His sacrifice made it possible for the promise stated above:
Hebrews 10:17-18 (ESV)
then he adds,
“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”
Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
We are forgiven. He no longer sees our sin!!!
