Listen To Wisdom From Your Parents - Provers 23-24

Proverbs 23:22 (NASBStr)

Listen to your father who begot you,

And do not despise your mother when she is old.

Proverbs 23:22 (ESV)

Listen to your father who gave you life,

and do not despise your mother when she is old.

Back in Proverbs 1:8 Solomon started this whole collection of proverbs by telling the listener to listen to his father and his mother.  Solomon is a firm believer that God has set up a system whereby He distributes knowledge and wisdom.  God speaks through parents.   It should be noted that God's system is founded on parents living in the fear of The Lord.    But, God's command to honor father and mother are not condition upon their behaviors.   He is telling us to listen to fathers and mothers.   He especially says to not despise them when they are old ... especially your mother.   Apparently God believes man will have a temptation to despise the council of the mother as she ages.   Solomon tells about this truth in:

Proverbs 10:1 (ESV)

The Proverbs of Solomon.

A wise son makes a glad father,

but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.

Proverbs 15:20 (ESV)

A wise son makes a glad father,

but a foolish man despises his mother.

Proverbs 30:17 (ESV)

The eye that mocks a father

and scorns to obey a mother

will be picked out by the ravens of the valley

and eaten by the vultures.

When we are old we are still to listen to our parents.   God will deliver His wisdom and knowledge through them as they walk in faith with Him.
