1 Chronicles 29:14-15 (ESV)
“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding.
This is such a great epitaph for life. David is about to die. He is setting up the kingdom of Israel in every way possible so that his son, Solomon, will have great success. He has put in place financial overseers. He has military leaders and followers in place. He has the worship team all assembled. He has the materials all laid out to build the Temple and even has blue prints drawn out. He has all aspects of the royal court ready. David has prepared everyone for life after his death. But he has not taken credit for any of it. Instead we get the above last lines of his memoir. He gives all praise and blessings to God for choosing him when he was nothing. God has given him all this and it was his pleasure to steward it. David is not the center, here. God is. God is the center. This is a life well lived. Before we die we ought prepare others for success. In death, that will be our success.
