Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
These three verses are taken at the end of Jesus’ high priestly prayer. They are Jesus final recorded prayer before He goes to the cross. In them next chapter he is arrested and tried and declared guilty by the religious and political system. Yet, at this very moment, He prayers what we read in the above. He wants is disciples (and all mankind through them) to know His glory and the glory of His Father, God. He wants us to see His glory and the glory of the Father. This entire book of John began with this declaration:
John 1:14 (ESV)
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Paul would later say it this way:
2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV)
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
The entire purpose for Jesus’ coming to the earth was for mankind to behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus:
2 Corinthians 4:6 (ESV)
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
When we read the Gospel accounts it is for the purpose of seeing God’s glory in the life of Jesus.
Andy Jesus is going to continue to make it known, to us. We are supposed to be in a constant state of looking for and beholding the glory of God.
