God has spoken in his holiness:
“With exultation I will divide up Shechem
and portion out the Vale of Succoth.
Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine;
Ephraim is my helmet;
Judah is my scepter.
Moab is my washbasin;
upon Edom I cast my shoe;
over Philistia I shout in triumph.”
In Psalm 60 we have a song about an upcoming battle. This is one of David’s legacy psalms. David is at war. It seems he was always at war. His fight with Goliath on preceded his fight with Saul. His fight with Saul only proceeded his fight with his countrymen to unite the kingdom (this song is a testament to that fight). His fight to unite the kingdom proceeded by his fight with sin from within, via adultery and murder. His fight from sin from within proceeded by his fight with his son, Absalom. His fight with Absalom proceeded his fight with death and his legacy. David is at war.
The above passage is a line from a song about victory in that fight. David is being told by God that these nations will become part of his kingdom. He is being told that God is in the fight and will bring them under his kingdom. He rejoices in song about God giving him these victories. The imagery of the helmet, the scepter, the shoe all show dominance and ownership. David does not just defeat his enemies, they become his possession. When God fights for us we have no need to fear. God is the strength of our lives and, in His time, gives us victory. We ought to take time and praise Him for those victories.
1 Corinthians 15:57 (ESV)
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
