Water of Life - Psalms 45-47

Psalms 46:4-5 (ESV)

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy habitation of the Most High.

God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;

God will help her when morning dawns.

In Psalm 46 we have a song about God’s greatness and power.   The writer uses a word picture in the above passage to talk about God providing to His people (who were living in and around Jerusalem) a river of life.   Having no water is a bad thing.  Having too much water is a bad thing.   God is indicating that He is the source of life for all those who want to live with Him (Jerusalem being a picture of His presence).   God is our source of life.  That is what the passage is speaking about.  He is our refreshments and He is our source of gladness and joy.   God is making Himself known to us.   He said it this way in the mouth of His Son, Jesus:

John 4:10 (ESV)

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

God is our living water.   We have no worry to die of spiritual thirst.  He is the satisfying springs of life.

Psalms 23:2 (ESV)

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside still waters.
