Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
The context of this chapter of Paul’s letter is about sexual immorality that is happening in the church. Paul starts the chapter this way:
1 Corinthians 5:1 (ESV)
It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife.
Purity in the body is of utmost importance! Without purity the body will be destroyed! This is Paul's message in these two chapters. When people are living in impurity and engaging in open sin, the church (the Body of Christ) needs to purify it. That may sound harsh and may sound judgmental, but it is essential for the survival of the church. Think of it this way: If your one-year old was about to put some foreign object in their mouth, what would you do? Would that be harsh? If you were about to drink water and you discovered that someone was about to put a drop of poison in the glass, what would you do? Would your reaction or be consider rash, harsh, or judgmental? You see then that purity is on all of our minds. It is no less important to the Body of Christ. The big idea here is to do what you can in your own life and the lives of others to keep the Body of Christ pure ... if not, we will all suffer for the poison we allow to run through our veins.
