6 Turn to him from whom people have deeply revolted, O children of Israel. 7 For in that day everyone shall cast away his idols of silver and his idols of gold, which your hands have sinfully made for you.
8 “And the Assyrian shall fall by a sword, not of man;
and a sword, not of man, shall devour him;
and he shall flee from the sword,
and his young men shall be put to forced labor.
9 His rock shall pass away in terror,
and his officers desert the standard in panic,”
declares the LORD, whose fire is in Zion,
and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.
The nation of Israel has rebelled against God. God has sent the Assyrian army to take the captive, destroy Jerusalem and bring harm upon them. Instead of turning to God they have turned to Egypt for deliverance:’
Isaiah 31:1 (ESV)
Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help
and rely on horses,
who trust in chariots because they are many
and in horsemen because they are very strong,
but do not look to the Holy One of Israel
or consult the LORD!
The prophet Isaiah was sent to speak truth to them. To warn them. To make sure they were not seeking help from foreign aide, but rather turning to God, even though it is He would is sending Assyria. The above passages is the promise from the prophet of what would happen if they turned to Him. If they did, certain promises would be assured. But they first must turn to Him. They must turn away. If they did that, God would return to them. He would rescue them from this discipline. He would assure that the Assyrians would be turned away. When we sin we receive discipline. However, when we turn to God and away from our idols, God allows us to see His hand of deliverance; His glory. Note how Paul said this to the church at Corinth:
2 Corinthians 3:16-18 (ESV)
But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
When we turn to the Lord we remove a veil that prevents us from seeing the Lord. But when we repent and turn to Him the veil is removed and we see His glory. When we repent He is revealed. Repentance always leads to revelation.
