Keep Your Vows - Become Unmovable - Psalms 15-17

Psalms 15:4 (ESV)

in whose eyes a vile person is despised,

but who honors those who fear the LORD;

who swears to his own hurt and does not change;

Psalm 15 is about the person who will never be moved.  The last verse of the chapter reads, “He who does these things shall never be moved.”  All the verse before that ending list all these things the author is referring to. In the above text he is telling us that the man who is not moved is the one who:

1. Has eyes (discernment) for those who do not follow God.   When it says he despises those who are vile, he doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have love and compassion for the lost.  He means we should despise the actions of them but still find a way to show them the love of God.

2. Has honor (favor) for those who fear the Lord.   When we see others who have a relationship with God we are to honor them.  The first line (despise those who are vile) is in contrast to the second line (honor those who fear the Lord).   We are to have discernment on how we interact with the world.   We are to have a different approach with one, however, than we do the other.   Since God so loved the world that He gave, we too, ought to love the vile and those who fear the Lord.  But the above line clearly teaches us we are to have a different approach with the both of them.

3. He is to swear to his own hurt.  The NIV states it this way, “who keeps his oath

even when it hurts.”  God demands we keep our oaths, even when it costs us something.  Note the following.  You can use the below list of verses on keeping a vow to pray each day. To do so would fulfill what this psalm says to become unmovable:

Numbers 30:2 (ESV)

If a man vows a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

Judges 11:34-35(ESV)

Then Jephthah came to his home at Mizpah. And behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances. She was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter. And as soon as he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me. For I have opened my mouth to the LORD, and I cannot take back my vow.”
