God Cares For His Creation - Psalms 143-145

Psalms 145:14-21 (ESV)

14 The LORD upholds all who are falling

and raises up all who are bowed down.

15 The eyes of all look to you,

and you give them their food in due season.

16 You open your hand;

you satisfy the desire of every living thing.

17 The LORD is righteous in all his ways

and kind in all his works.

18 The LORD is near to all who call on him,

to all who call on him in truth.

19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;

he also hears their cry and saves them.

20 The LORD preserves all who love him,

but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD,

and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.

What a great passage to meditate upon.   This is a praise psalm and gives us a number of reasons to just praise God.

  1. Vs. 14 - He upholds those who fall down.  When we read the second line of vs 14 we realize the fall down is a parallelism of the second line, to those who bow down.  However, it could mean He upholds those who both fall and bow.
  2. Vs 15 - Those who look to Him have their needs of food cared for by Him.  We can rejoice because it is God who meets these basic needs for us.
  3. Vs 16 - God will satisfy the desire of every living thing.  This is probably in the context of food (basic needs) and shouldn’t be stretched to our lustful desires and wants.  The point is that God sees His creation and wants to care for that creation ... each living thing He created.
  4. Vs 17 - the Lord is righteous in that care.  His care is not swayed one way more than the other.  He not only cares for His creation, He does so in a righteous manner.
  5. Vs. 18 - the Lord is near us when we reach out to Him in holiness and truth.   Jesus would later state in John 4 that we must worship Him in Spirit and in truth.  This verse is the forerunner to Jesus’ teaching. We must come to God with a true heart.
  6. Vs. 19 - Here the writer qualifies more what we discovered in  vs 16.  Yes, God satisfies the desire of every living thing, but that promise, centers on those who fear Him.   He hears the cries of those who stand in awe of Him.
  1. Vs 20 - God shows a distinction between how He cares for those who love Him and those who don’t.   Those who do not love God should not look for favor from God.
  1. Vs 21 - what is our response to all these truths about God’s care and awesome provision?   We ought to burst out in prayer.   The writer speaks about his own mouth praising God, but also believes all flesh should bless His holy name.  And, not just for a moment, but for all eternity.

God intervenes in the lives of mankind with goodness and blessings.  We ought to praise Him for His greatness to us.
