Be Like A Tree - Psalms 1-2

 Psalms 1:3 (ESV)

He is like a tree

planted by streams of water

that yields its fruit in its season,

and its leaf does not wither.

In all that he does, he prospers.

You cannot read the first two psalms of this book without seeing the difference in the world between God's way of living and Man's way of living. When we obey God we have a blessed life. When we disobey and ignore God He laughs at us and our life is soon in disarray. Those who trust and obey God are like trees next to a stream bringing forth fruit in due season. But, those who disobey and trust in themselves will be rebuked and terrified by Him (2:4). Our choices each day are to walk with God or walk away from Him. One carries its own reward and the other its deep risks.

In the above verse we read that those who walk with God (verses 1-2) will be like a tree that bears fruit, has beautiful and healthy leaves and will be prosperous.   This should remind us a parable Jesus taught in Matthew 15.   Note one portion of Jesus’ teaching:

Matthew 15:13 (ESV)

He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up.

In another parable, of the seeds (God’s Word) Jesus taught this:

Luke 8:4-8 (ESV)

And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable, “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

When we walk with God it is He who will produce in us fruit worthy of Him and His glory and praise.   The writer of Psalm one wanted us to know that as we walk with God we will bear fruit from God and for God.   That is the key lesson of life.   Walk with God and we will produce the fruit He designed for us to produce:

Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
