I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen for the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.
It is doubtful that any of us had a class in our educational journey entitled, “How to wait!” This is not something we often find time to do. Our waiting skills probably depend upon what we are waiting for, why we are waiting and upon who are we waiting. We probably don’t mind waiting in the dentist office for a tooth extraction. But for tooth pain we prefer immediate attention. We don’t mind waiting for bills to come. But we love to have checks sent right away. In the above passage we read the song writers thoughts on how to wait and upon who to wait. He is waiting for the LORD. That is a worth while wait because we know:
1). He is worth waiting for.
2). He will always come through.
3). He will bring what is best for us when He arrives.
Notice how the writer describes his waiting. He states that he watches for the LORD. He is not idle in his wait. He is not playing games while waiting. He is not scrolling his social media accounts while waiting. He is waiting like a “watchmen.” We don’t have a concept of a “watchmen” in our lives or our culture. But we should think of it has a sentry standing guard at the door of our house. We should think of solider guarding his/her post. The watchmen in ancient cities were imperative for protection. They could not sleep and they could not be distracted. That is how we are to wait for God. We may not like to wait, but the fact is God has His own timing. Her is one puritan preacher who had some great thoughts on waiting on God:
C H Spurgeon observed about prayer in his book Illustrations and Meditations: “Frequently the richest answers are not the speediest…A prayer may be all the longer on its voyage because it is bringing us a heavier freight of blessing. Delayed answers are not only trials of faith, but they give us an opportunity of honoring God by our steadfast confidence in Him under apparent repulses.”
