We Have An Anchor - Hebrews 5-7

Hebrews 6:19-20 (ESV)
We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

When it comes to security we often find ourselves wondering what is secure and what is not. In the book of Hebrews we have an entire letter written to tell us we can trust God and have complete confidence in His care.   We have a great word picture in the above passage.    The term “forerunner” was the term for a smaller boat that was used to take the anchor of a larger boat into the harbor.   The smaller boat, the “prodromos” would drop the anchor into a tight harbor and once the anchor was secured the crew on the larger boat would pull on the line and draw the larger boat into the harbor.   Those in the small boat would pull as well.  This is what Jesus has done for us.   He has gone into heaven, behind the curtain that separates us from God and He has become the anchor.  The Holy Spirit, in our lives, pulls on the line as Jesus is pulling us into the harbor.    Our security is NOT in our own efforts but in the anchor that Jesus set.  He is out “prodromos.”   He has gone before us and is our security in life and death.   We do not have our hope in just a promise, although it is.  We do not have our hope in a plan, or though there is one.  We do not have our promise in just hope, although we have hope.  We have our hope in a person.  The Person of Jesus Christ and what He has done to secure our life behind the curtain with God.
