Tag: Zeal Does Not Equal Righteousness - Romans 9-11

Romans 10:2-3
For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.

Paul has a deep compassion for his fellow Israelites.  He desires them to be saved (Romans 9:1-2).  However, Paul recognizes that even though they have a great zeal for wanting to know God and to be righteous, they do not receive it.   Paul has spent the entire book so far writing about how we are justified by grave through faith and that it is not if our own.  Yet, the Jewish nation insisted on establishing their own righteousness and failed to submit, through faith, to Gods righteousness.

We have the same thing in today’s religious quarters.  Manning wants to establish their own form of righteousness rather than be submissive in faith to Christ.  They are very zealous.  But not “according to knowledge.”   The “knowledge “ Paul is talking about is the knowledge of the gospel message.   Mankind can only find Gods approval by coming to God but faith in Christ.   It is not by “trying” it is about “relying “ on Christ’s finish work on the cross.  Knowledge of the story of the gospel is not enough.  But knowledge mixed with faith does lead to righteousness.   Works does lead to righteousness.
