Deuteronomy 28:28
The Lord will strike you with madness and blindness and confusion of mind,
Tag: What Happens When God’s Word is Forsaken?
The above verse, falls in the middle of what is referred to as the blessings and the curses. Moses is charging the nation of Israel with the benefits of following God‘s Word, and the curses if they don’t follow God‘s Word. In the above verses we have one of the aspects of what happens when we fail to follow God‘s Word. God makes promises to us. He makes good promises to us and he makes bad promises to us. In the above verse we read that when we fail to follow God‘s word, He will cause our minds to be confused. In the beginning of this blessing and cursing section we read an initial command of Moses:
Deuteronomy 27:1
Now Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, “Keep the whole commandment that I command you today.
When we fail to “keep” the whole commands of God’s Word, we will end up with the above passage being true in our lives: Confusion and blindness of the mind. Note what Paul says about the non-believer’s mind (when they disobey God’s Word):
Colossians 1:21
And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,
Romans 8:7
For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot.
Those who disobey God will have their minds blinded to the truth of God’s Word. When their minds are blinded to truth they can only follow their own wicked devices. Disobedience to God’s Word leads to confusion and blindness.
