Amos 1:3
Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of Damascus,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they have threshed Gilead
with threshing sledges of iron.
Amos 1:6
Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of Gaza,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they carried into exile a whole people
to deliver them up to Edom.
Amos 1:9
Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of Tyre,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they delivered up a whole people to Edom,
and did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
Amos 1:11
Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of Edom,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because he pursued his brother with the sword
and cast off all pity,
and his anger tore perpetually,
and he kept his wrath forever.
Tag: God’s Wrath Is Well Deserved
In the above four verses (and there are four more, exactly like them in this section) are statements by the prophet Amos about the coming wrath of God upon various countries. God is going to pour His wrath out on those who reject Him and His Word. The prophet is leading up to this statement, about God’s People, Israel:
Amos 2:6
Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of Israel,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they sell the righteous for silver,
and the needy for a pair of sandals—
Each statement is a statement that God’s judgment is rightly deserved. God’s wrath is coming upon them “because ...”. When God condemns and judges mankind it will not be because He is arbitrary in nature. God is sovereign and He can do what He will. But, God’s wrath will always be poured out on those who sin and reject His grace. There is always a “because.”
