Sing! Psalm 119:73-176

Psalms 119:171-172 (ESV)

My lips will pour forth praise,

for you teach me your statutes.

My tongue will sing of your word,

for all your commandments are right.

Singing, song, and music, have been a staple of human existence.  Historians concept all types of dates in ancient history for songwriting.  The first song we recorded in the Bible is the song of Moses and Israelites leaving Egypt (Ex15).  But even before, then we have this recording in Genesis:

Genesis 4:21 (ESV)

His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.

However, I’ll be reading Job that the “morning stars” (angels) sang at creation:

Job 38:4-7 (ESV)

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?

Tell me, if you have understanding.

Who determined its measurements—surely you know!

Or who stretched the line upon it?

On what were its bases sunk,

or who laid its cornerstone,

when the morning stars sang together

and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

The content of has many areas of focus.  We can sing to and about our love.  We can sing to and about our friends. We can sing to our lives.

In the above verses we read that we sing to and about God’s word. That is the source of our praise.  We would not know what to sing about regarding God if it were not for His word.  Singing is our is a main source of our praise to Him.

Ephesians 5:17-20 (ESV)

Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
