Obey and Teach God’s Word - Deuteronomy 4-6

Deuteronomy 6:5-9 (ESV)

You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Moses is writing to the second generation of Israelites who have wondered in the desert.  The first group failed to obey God and have faith He could bring them into the promised land.   That generation all passed away and only Moses, Joshua and Caleb would remain.   Moses, too, however, would not make it into the promised land.  The reason they all missed was because of disobedience.   This is why Moses is writing the above words.  He is fearful that this generation will repeat the same mistake and disobey.   To combat that he prescribes the following:

1. Make sure that all we have in our hearts and lives and minds and soul is our love for God.

2. Make sure we teach God’s word to our children, the next generation.   The one sure way the next generation will fail is to not know God’s word.

3. Write God’s word on our hands, our body, our gates and our doors.   Having God’s word in front of us helps us to make sure we follow God’s word.

This theme of obeying God’s word is throughout Scripture.    Moses states it hear and the Apostle John ends the Bible the same way:

Revelation 1:3 (ESV)

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near.
