John 12:9-11 (ESV)
When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.
Make no mistake, the reason the religious leaders of the day tried to kill Jesus was out of envy and jealousy. Jesus was, in their eyes, stealing their glory. They loved the prominent places in the market place.
Matthew 23:5-7 (ESV)
They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others.
When Jesus threatened their place of honor they decided to take Him out. There has been a long line of those who try to steal God’s glory.

- The King of Babylon (Isaiah 14;12-15)
- Satan to Eve (Genesis 3)
- Satan himself (Isaiah 14:12-15)
Stealing God’s glory is what mankind does. Jesus came to save us from that sin in particular.
